I accidentally formatted an external drive that was using exFAT and need help figuring out if data recovery is still possible. I haven’t copied anything new to it yet, but I’m not sure what tools or steps are safest for recovering files from a formatted exFAT drive.
First thing: stop writing anything to that SSD. Don’t copy files onto it, don’t save edits, and don’t format it hoping that will “fix” things. With exFAT, deleted files are often still sitting there until something new overwrites that space, so the less you touch the drive, the better.
exFAT can be fairly recoverable in cases like accidental deletion. When you delete a folder, the file system usually just marks the space as free instead of wiping the actual contents right away. That’s why recovery is still worth trying if you caught it early.
If Windows or macOS still detects the drive, I’d use recovery software before running repair tools. I’ve had good results with Disk Drill for exFAT drives. It can handle accidental deletion, corruption, and a lot of quick-format situations.
The safer order would be:
- If the SSD is acting flaky, disconnecting, or showing read errors, make a disk image first and scan that instead of scanning the original drive.
- Run a Universal Scan.
- Preview the recoverable files before saving them. If photos, videos, or documents open in preview, that’s usually a good sign.
- Recover the files to a different drive. Never save recovered files back to the same exFAT drive you’re scanning.
If the issue is corruption rather than deletion, I’d still recover the important data first. Repair tools and reformatting can come later, after the files are already somewhere safe.
A mistaken quick format is also still worth trying to recover from. Quick formatting mostly rebuilds file system metadata and often leaves the actual file contents alone. A full format is much worse because it overwrites data, so recovery chances drop a lot.
If the drive shows as RAW, throws errors when you open it, or Windows says it needs to be formatted, don’t click through that prompt yet. Recovery tools can sometimes read a drive even when the operating system refuses to mount it normally.
I’d also check the SSD’s health before pushing it too hard. On Windows, CrystalDiskInfo is a good free option, and Disk Drill has SMART monitoring too. If you see lots of reallocated or pending sectors, or the drive starts disappearing, disconnecting, or making odd noises during scans, stop and consider a professional recovery service instead.
So for the cases you listed:
- Deleted the wrong folder? Yes, recovery is definitely worth trying.
- Corrupted exFAT external drive? Recover the files first, then think about repairs.
- Quick formatted it by accident? Still a decent chance if you stopped using it right away.
- Not sure whether to format first? Don’t. Recover first, format later if needed.
The main thing isn’t just that it’s exFAT. It’s how much the drive has been used since the files disappeared. If you stopped using it quickly, your odds are usually much better.
The annoying catch is that a recovery scan can make things look more recoverable than they really are, especially if it finds old directory entries but the actual file contents are damaged or partly overwritten. So yes, exFAT recovery is worth trying since you stopped using the drive, but don’t judge by file names alone. Preview a few important files first, especially large videos, archives, or project files. I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on not repairing or formatting first, but I’d be a little more conservative: if the files matter a lot, image the drive before letting any tool grind away at it for hours. Disk Drill is fine to try if it can preview what you need, just recover to a separate disk and don’t pay for anything until you’ve confirmed the previews aren’t garbage.
A quick format on an external SSD is not the same situation as a quick format on an old spinning hard drive.
That’s the detail I’d be more worried about here. A lot of recovery advice assumes the data blocks are still sitting there untouched, which is often true enough on HDDs and many flash cards. With an SSD, the operating system may send TRIM/UNMAP commands after deletion or formatting, and if the USB enclosure passes those through, the SSD may mark those blocks for cleanup. Once that happens, recovery software can still show folder names or file records, but the actual file contents may come back as zeroes, corrupt files, or partial junk.
So yes, it is still worth trying, but I would lower expectations if this is definitely an SSD.
I agree with the “do not format again” advice. I’d go further and say don’t keep plugging it in just to check whether it looks okay. Every mount is one more chance for the system to write small metadata changes or for the SSD firmware to do background cleanup. If the data is important, leave it disconnected until you have a plan.
The best first move depends on the value of the files:
If the files are replaceable, then scanning with a recovery tool is reasonable. Disk Drill, R-Studio, UFS Explorer, DMDE, PhotoRec, etc. can all be used for this kind of situation. The brand matters less than the workflow: scan read-only, preview results, and recover to another physical drive.
If the files are expensive, irreplaceable, or work-related, do not “try a bunch of tools” on the original drive first. Make a sector-by-sector image if the drive is readable, then scan the image. If the drive is failing, cloning with something designed for bad media is safer than letting a normal recovery app hammer it for hours.
The annoying exFAT-specific catch is fragmentation. exFAT is common on external drives because it works across Windows and macOS, but after a format, the directory and allocation info may not be reliable anymore. Small files like JPEGs may recover fine by signature scan. Big files, video files, VM images, archives, databases, and project bundles are much more hit or miss because the tool has to reconstruct which chunks belong together. Seeing the filename is nice, but it does not prove the file is usable.
I would not judge success by the number of files found. Recovery tools love to report huge numbers. Instead, test a few files that actually matter:
Open recovered photos at full size, not just thumbnails.
Play recovered videos past the first few seconds.
Extract ZIP/RAR/7z archives.
Open documents and check the later pages.
For project files, open them in the real app if possible.
If those work, then paying for a tool may make sense. If previews are broken or everything is 0 KB, don’t assume a different paid app will magically fix it. It might, but that is the point where you should slow down and maybe ask in a recovery-focused place with details like drive model, OS used to format it, whether it was quick or full format, and whether it is HDD, SSD, SD card, or USB flash.
Small correction to the “full format is worse” point too: yes, usually, but the exact behavior depends on OS, drive type, and device. On modern systems a full format can write across the volume, which is bad for recovery. On SSDs, TRIM can be the real killer even after something that looked like a quick operation. That’s why the HDD vs SSD detail matters so much.
If this were mine and I was trying the DIY route, I’d do this:
Unplug the drive.
Prepare a different drive with enough free space for an image and recovered files.
Image the formatted drive if the data is worth the extra time.
Scan the image, not the original, if possible.
Recover only to the separate drive.
Verify the recovered files before doing anything else to the formatted one.
Don’t run CHKDSK, First Aid, “repair disk,” partition fixers, or anything that writes changes until after recovery. Those tools are for making a file system mount again, not for preserving deleted data. Sometimes they help the disk look cleaner while making recovery worse.
Plan the destination first.
A lot of people get as far as “the recovery app found my files” and then realize they only have the same formatted drive available to save them to. Don’t do that. If the external drive is 2 TB, assume you may need close to 2 TB for an image, plus more space for recovered files. Even if you only care about a few folders, the safe workflow needs somewhere else to put the results.
I agree with the TRIM warning above, but I wouldn’t get stuck choosing the “perfect” app before you solve the storage problem. Disk Drill, R-Studio, DMDE, UFS Explorer, PhotoRec, etc. are all secondary to this rule: install the software somewhere else, scan read-only if possible, and recover to a different physical disk. If you use Disk Drill, treat the preview as the test, not the file count. A scan saying it found 80,000 files means very little if the videos won’t play or the documents open blank.
Small caveat on the health-check advice: SMART over USB can be unreliable or unavailable, especially with cheap enclosures. A “good” status does not prove the data is safe, and a missing SMART report does not automatically mean the drive is dead. If the drive is reading normally, make the image. If it disconnects, stalls, or gets weirdly slow, stop poking at it and decide whether the data is worth professional recovery. The worst middle ground is running five different scans on the original drive because each one looks like it is “almost” working.
