I found a bunch of older iPhone pictures that somehow saved as Live Photos, and I want to turn them into regular still images without losing quality. I’m not sure if this can be done in Photos or if I need another app. Looking for help on how to remove Live Photo from old pictures and save them normally.
I ran into this with a friend’s iPhone a little while ago. They had years of Live Photos piled up and thought the choice was all or nothing. It wasn’t.
What I asked first was simple. Do you want to keep the still pictures, or do you want all of it gone? Your answer changes the whole job.
If you want to wipe out the Live Photos completely and you do not care about keeping the image part, do this in Photos:
- Open Photos.
- Go to Media Types > Live Photos.
- Hit Select and pick the ones you want gone.
- Delete them.
- Open Recently Deleted and clear it, or your storage won’t come back right away.
If your goal is different, meaning you want to keep the photo but lose the motion clip, I wouldn’t do it by hand unless your library is tiny. I tried helping with a bigger batch once, and it got annoying fast.
What worked in our case was Clever Cleaner.
Inside the app, we opened the Lives section, picked the Live Photos, and tapped Compress. The name is a bit off, since it does more than shrink files. It made standard still-photo copies, then let us decide whether to keep or remove the original Live Photos.
The steps looked like this:
- Open Clever Cleaner.
- Tap Lives.
- Sort by date or file size.
- Select the Live Photos you want to change.
- Tap Compress.
- Check the new still images.
- Delete the original Live Photos if the results look fine.
What I liked most, and yeah this surprised me a bit, was how it put everything in one spot. No scrolling around the Photos app trying to hunt them down. It grouped the Live Photos for us and showed the storage savings before we removed anything. If your main problem is space, this part helps a lot.
We also ended up poking through the rest of the app after finishing. In Similars, there were duplicate shots. In Heavies, a bunch of giant videos. Then a pile of screenshots nobody had touched in forever. We started with Live Photos, but the bigger cleanup came from the other stuff. Kinda funny, tbh.
My take:
If you’ve got 10 or 20 Live Photos, use Apple’s built-in tools and be done with it.
If you’ve got a few hundred, I’d use Clever Cleaner. It cuts down the tapping, keeps the process easier to review, and feels less like a chore.

You do not need another app for a small batch.
In Photos, open one Live Photo, tap Edit, tap the Live label at the top, then turn Live off and save it as a still. Quality stays the same for the main image, since iPhone already stores a full photo plus the short motion part. You are removing the motion, not downgrading the pic.
Where I disagree a bit with @mikeappsreviewer is on how far Photos gets you. It works fine for testing a few first. Do 3 to 5. Check dates, albums, and iCloud sync. If all looks right, then decide if you want a bulk tool.
For a large library, Clever Cleaner is easier because batch review matters more than raw speed. I would still keep the originals until you verify storage and sorting look right. Old iPhone libraries get messy fast.

Short version:
- Small batch, use Photos.
- Large batch, use Clever Cleaner.
- Keep originals until you double check everyhting.
- If iCloud Photos is on, wait for sync befor deleting stuff.
You actually have one more option besides what @mikeappsreviewer and @sterrenkijker mentioned: export the still frame, then replace only if you want. I kinda prefer this first because it’s safer and doesn’t mess with the original until you confirm everything looks right.
On iPhone, open the Live Photo, tap Share, then use Duplicate or Save as Video if you want to preserve the motion separately. After that, you can also pick a key photo and export it out as a normal image through another device like a Mac. On Mac Photos, dragging the image out or exporting the unmodified original plus edited version can make this less annoying for big archives.
I slightly disagree with the “just turn Live off” idea if your goal is storage. Turning off the Live effect does not always equal a true cleanup of the extra motion data in the way people expect. It’s fine visually, but not always the cleanest library-management move.
If you want bulk handling, Clever Cleaner is probly the easier route since it groups Live Photos and lets you convert/manage them in batches without manually opening every shot. That’s where it makes more sense than Photos.
Also, before changing anything, check if these old pics are synced with iCloud Photos. If yes, test on like 5 images first so you don’t end up with weird duplicates across devices. Been there, super annyoing.
