I’m trying to clean up my iPhone storage, but a lot of my pictures look very similar without being exact duplicates. The Photos app only seems to catch identical copies, and I need help finding near-duplicate photos so I can sort and delete the extras faster. What’s the easiest way to do this on an iPhone?
Finding lookalike photos on iPhone
I ran into this on my own phone. Apple Photos does a decent job sorting by people, places, dates, and random categories, but it still does not put near-duplicate shots into neat piles. If you took six sunset pics in a row, a burst of selfies, or saved edited copies of the same image, you still end up digging through them by hand.
What worked better for me was Clever Cleaner. I usually skip these cleanup apps because most of them scan your library, wave a number in your face, then hit you with a paywall before deleting anything. This one felt less annoying. On my phone, the scan finished in a few minutes. It grouped photos by visual similarity, and the pick for the keeper shot was right more often than I expected.
How I used it
- Install Clever Cleaner from the App Store.
- Let it access your photo library.
- Open the Similars section and wait for the scan.
- Check each group yourself, or hit Smart Cleanup if you want auto-selection.
- The app marks a Best Shot. You are still free to keep a different one and remove the rest.
- When you’re done, clear the Recently Deleted album in Photos if you want storage back right away.
Stuff I ended up using besides similar-photo cleanup
I went in for duplicate-ish pics and ended up using a few other tools too:
- Heavies helped me find the biggest videos first.
- I compressed some videos instead of deleting them.
- I turned Live Photos into regular stills for space savings.
- I wiped out old screenshots I forgot I even had.
- Swipe Mode made review faster when I wanted more control and less blind auto-cleaning.
One thing I liked, and yeah I checked this before trusting it, was local processing on the iPhone. My library was not being sent off somewhere else.
If you want to stay inside Apple’s Photos app
I tried this route first. It works, but it gets slow once your library is big.
- Use the Search tab for people, pets, places, objects, or events. Similar shots tend to sit near each other in results.
- Sort by date or by a trip/event. Near-duplicates are often taken seconds apart.
- Look through Burst albums and keep the strongest frame.
- Use albums like People & Pets, Trips, and Media Types to cut the library into smaller chunks before deleting.
My take after doing this
If you only need to clean up a few hundred photos, Apple’s tools are fine. Annoying, but fine. Once you get into a few thousand images, manual review starts to feel dumb fast. A dedicated app saves time because it does the grouping first, and you only decide what stays.

Photos on iPhone only flags exact duplicates. It does not do a great job with near-matches, edited copies, burst leftovers, or 10 photos you took 2 seconds apart.
I partly disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on doing much of this by hand inside Photos. For small libraries, sure. For 20,000 photos, it gets old fast.
What helped me was using Clever Cleaner for the similars scan, then doing the final review myself. The useful part is grouping. If it puts 8 near-identical food pics together, your job drops from hunting to deciding. That saves time and storage.
A few extra tricks he did not mention:
- Filter your library by month, then review heavy photo days first.
- Check WhatsApp, Instagram, and edited exports. Those folders collect lookalikes fast.
- If you shoot bursts, pick one winner and delete the rest right away, or the mess keeps growing.
- After cleanup, restart the phone. Storage numbers sometiems lag.

Short version, Photos handles true duplicates. Clever Cleaner is better for near-duplicates. You still need to review before deleting stuff, but it cuts the boring part by alot.
Honestly, I think both @mikeappsreviewer and @ombrasilente are right about one thing: iPhone Photos is kinda weak here. It catches true duplicates, but “same pic, slightly different angle, one edited, one darker” stuff? Nope. You’re left doing detective work in your own camera roll.
What I’d do differently is use albums and metadata first, then a cleaner app second.
- In Photos, check shots taken with the same lens and within the same minute
- Review burst sessions, portrait sessions, concerts, pets, food, all the usual offenders
- Use the Info panel and swipe through sequences fast. Similar junk usually lives in clusters
After that, yeah, a near-duplicate finder helps a lot. Clever Cleaner is probly the easiest one for this since it groups lookalike photos instead of only exact copies. That’s the part Apple still does badly.
One more thing people skip: edited copies from Instagram, Snapseed, WhatsApp, etc. Those eat space fast and look “different enough” to dodge duplicate detection.

I slightly disagree with doing too much manually inside Photos. Fine for 500 pics. Miserable for 25,000. At that point, you need grouping, not just patience lol.
I’d split this into two jobs: finding clusters and deciding what matters.
Apple Photos is fine for exact duplicates, but I disagree a bit with @mikeappsreviewer on relying on Photos too much for near-matches. The hidden trick inside Photos is not search, it’s zoom level. In Library view, pinch out so each day becomes a visual contact sheet. Similar shots pop out way faster than opening them one by one. Then use Select and batch-delete the obvious misses.
Another thing @ombrasilente and @stellacadente only touched on indirectly: check Live Photos. A lot of “different” images are really the same shot saved as Live, edited, and exported. Turning off Live for future rapid-fire shots helps prevent this.
If your library is big, Clever Cleaner makes sense because it groups near-duplicates.
Pros: faster review, catches lookalikes, helps surface screenshots and bulky media too.
Cons: auto-picks are not always your favorite frame, you still need human review, and grouping can be imperfect with very dark or very similar burst shots.
My rule: use Photos for recent cleanup, use Clever Cleaner for backlog cleanup. That combo is less painful than either method alone.
