IPhone Lagging Since Update And Nothing I Try Seems To Work - Help?

My iPhone has been lagging badly ever since the latest iOS update. Apps take longer to open, typing feels delayed, and the phone sometimes freezes for a few seconds. I’ve already tried restarting it, clearing storage, and updating my apps, but nothing has helped. I need advice on what else to do to fix iPhone lag after an iOS update.

Apps running smooth one day and then dragging the next is the kind of thing that makes you think the phone is dying. I’ve seen it a bunch of times, and most of the time it was not some fatal hardware mess. Also, I did not need to erase the phone.

How long I’d wait after an iOS update

If the slowdown showed up right after a fresh iOS install, I’d leave it alone for 2 to 3 days first. iPhones do a lot of cleanup work after a big update. Mine reprocessed Photos, rebuilt app stuff, and chewed through system indexing in the background. During that stretch, everything felt off. Scrolling lagged. Apps hesitated. The keyboard missed beats.

What helped was boring. I left it on the charger, connected to Wi-Fi, overnight for a couple nights. Once the phone finished its background tasks, performance improved on its own.

If you’re still dealing with the same lag after a full week, I would stop blaming the update.

Why old apps start acting broken

I kept running into two causes.

First one, outdated apps. After a major iOS release, some apps lag because they were built around the previous version. I’ve had one stale app drag the whole phone down enough to make it look like iOS was the problem. Open the App Store and install all pending updates first. No guesswork there.

Second one, low storage. This is the part people skip. iOS leans on free internal storage while juggling apps and temporary system data. When your storage gets tight, apps start fighting over scraps. Stuff that used to open fast starts hanging for no obvious reason.

Why battery health over 80 percent didn’t explain it

This threw me off the first time.

People see 80 percent plus battery health and assume performance should be perfect. Apple’s battery-related throttling kicks in when battery capacity drops below 80 percent. If you’re above that mark, the battery is usually not the speed problem.

What I kept finding instead was storage pressure. iOS seems to want around 10 to 15 percent of your total space free so it has room for temporary files and memory-related tasks. When my phone dropped under that range, the symptoms looked familiar every time. Slower apps. Sticky keyboard. Choppy scrolling. Random pauses.

Calls still working fine was a clue

One weird detail confused me until I looked into it. Calls stayed normal while apps lagged all over the place.

That tracks. Phone calls run through a separate baseband chip. The rest of the phone, apps, Safari, camera, keyboard, all lean on the main processor and storage. So if calling is fine but the rest feels heavy and delayed, I’d look at software load or storage first, not a failing phone radio or dead hardware.

What fixed it for me

I tried the usual stuff first. Restarted. Reset network settings. Switched off Background App Refresh. Some tiny gains, nothing major.

The real fix was cleaning storage, and in my case the problem was Photos. Not apps. Photos.

I used Clever Cleaner because manual cleanup was taking forever. The Heavies tab made the largest files show up first, which saved time right away. The Similars tab grouped near-duplicate shots and picked a best image from each set. Good for bursts, repeated tries, screenshots you forgot about. From what I saw, the processing stayed on-device.

I cleared about 15GB. Then I went into Photos and emptied Recently Deleted. That last part matters more than people think. If you skip it, deleted photos still sit there for 30 days and keep using storage.

Path is simple:
Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted > Delete All

If your free space number isn’t changing after cleanup, check there.

If the phone still feels slow after clearing space

A few things I’d check next.

If the phone feels warm, wait. I’ve had performance drop hard when the device got hot. Took the case off, left it alone for 20 minutes, and speed came back.

Try this too:
Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion

This cuts down interface animations. On a phone under load, fewer visual effects made it feel quicker to me, even when raw performance hadn’t changed much.

Also, if you leave Low Power Mode on all the time, turn it off and test again. It reduces performance on purpose to save battery. I’ve seen people forget it was enabled and spend an hour chasing the wrong issue.

If none of this changes anything after a week, I’d try:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings

This does not erase your apps or photos. It resets system settings only. I’ve seen stubborn lag clear up after this when the smaller fixes did nothing.

If the lag started right after the update, I disagree a bit with waiting too long. A day or two is fair. A full week feels excessive if your phone is freezing and typing is delayed.

I’d check three things first.

  1. Analytics logs
    Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data
Scroll for repeated panic-full, jetsam, or thermal entries. If you see the same log over and over, iOS is crashing parts of the system. That points to a bad app, heat, or failing hardware.

  2. Battery setting, not battery health
    Settings > Battery
Look for apps with huge background activity after the update. If one app is sitting there for hours, delete it and reinstall it. I’ve fixed lag this way more than once. Some apps go weird after iOS changes.

  3. Keyboard lag
If typing is delayed, turn off third-party keyboards first. Also disable dictation for a test. Keyboard lag often comes from the keyboard extension, not the whole phone.

@mikeappsreviewer is right to look at storage, but I’d also remove any VPN, antivirus, or ad blocker profile. Those mess with performance more often than people admit.

If Photos is the storage hog, Clever Cleaner is fine for clearing duplicates and large files fast. Also check this if you want a quick look at cleaner app options and performance tips: best iPhone cleaner apps compared for faster storage cleanup

If none of this changes it, do a backup to Finder or iCloud, then reinstall iOS with a computer. Not reset settings. Full reinstall. It takes longer, but it fixes corrupted update installs way more often than pepole think.

I’d look at one thing neither @mikeappsreviewer nor @nachtdromer really leaned on enough: Spotlight and Siri indexing bugs after updates.

If the lag is system-wide but weirdly inconsistent, try this:

Settings > Siri & Search
Turn off:

  • Show Suggestions
  • Show Recent Searches
  • Suggestions on Home Screen
  • Suggestions when Sharing
  • Suggestions when Listening

Leave it like that for a few hours, then test. I had an iPhone that acted drunk after an update, and search/indexing was the culprit. Same with widgets, btw. Remove a couple of heavy widgets from the Home Screen for a day. Weather, news, fitness, and shopping widgets can be sneaky little resource hogs.

Also check Mail. The stock Mail app can go nuts re-syncing after iOS updates, especially with multiple Gmail/Exchange accounts. If you use Mail, temporarily remove and re-add one account, or switch Fetch from Push:
Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data

I kinda disagree with jumping straight to a full reinstall unless you’ve checked these smaller annoyances first. Reinstalling iOS works, sure, but it’s a whole production.

Since you already cleared storage, I’d also look at what kind of storage you cleared. If Photos is still bloated, Clever Cleaner is actually useful for finding duplicate pics, similar shots, and big files fast. And if you want a quick sanity check before installing anything, here’s a pretty readable thread with actual user feedback on free iPhone cleaner apps: see what Reddit users say about the best free iPhone cleaner apps

One more odd fix that helped me once: delete any stale Home Screen pages full of old app folders/widgets, then rebuild them. Sounds dumb. Worked anyway. iOS gets wonky sometimes after updates, and not always for logical reasons lol.

I’d actually push back a little on the “just wait it out” angle from @nachtdromer and @vrijheidsvogel if the freezes are happening multiple times a day. Post-update indexing is real, sure, but hard typing lag plus short freezes can also come from settings corruption.

What I’d try that they did not really cover:

  • Check iPhone Storage graph, not just free space. If “System Data” is absurdly large and keeps growing, the update may have glitched. That often needs an iOS reinstall through Finder.
  • Turn off iCloud Photos sync temporarily if your phone is constantly warm. Sync storms can make the whole UI stutter.
  • Disable automatic app downloads and updates for a day. I’ve seen phones quietly updating 40 apps in the background and feeling awful.
  • Remove lock screen widgets too. People forget those refresh constantly.

On Clever Cleaner:
Pros: fast for finding giant videos, duplicates, similar shots, easy interface.
Cons: mostly useful if Photos/storage is the real bottleneck, and cleaner apps won’t fix a bad iOS install.

So yes, Clever Cleaner can help if storage is still messy, but if lag started exactly after the update, I’d lean software corruption before hardware. @mikeappsreviewer had the right instinct on storage, but I would not keep chasing cleanup forever. If the phone still lags after these checks, back up and reinstall iOS with a computer. That is usually the clean answer.
